Parking concepts for mixed-used urban central areas.

Abstract

Without planning precautions and controlling intervention, the parking pressure in old city areas will increase. Parking area, street capacity, the quality of urban public transportation and park-and-ride must be purposefully balanced in order to control urban traffic. The example of the area-wide parking concept of the City of Frankfurt am Main shows the methodology of parking space balance. Occupancy time graphs as an example of the routine daily parking space demand of residents, employees, customers and visitors can be transferred to other areas. These examples, combined with structural and supply data considerably reduce the total volume of the demand survey in the 27 city districts. Various strategies to cover the parking demand of residents and employees result in four scenarios. Supply and demand are variable quantities, which are dependent upon one and other in parking space balance.
