Abstract

The continued struggle to provide safe and efficient means of transportation while maintaining a balanced ecosystem has long been a challenge for transportation agencies. This is especially true in Canada, a country recognised for its natural splendour and long winters. The transportation industry incorporates a vast array of fields and the environment has found a somewhat unlikely advocate in the auto insurance arena. Transportation is a public concern that requires the co-operation of many; the dilemma is finding a common reason that earns the attention of several different fields. The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia has undertaken such groundbreaking initiative to improve winter road maintenance practices that will have lasting positive effects for the welfare of the environment and safety of the motoring public. Testimony to the success of the project is the number of agencies, associations, municipalities, businesses and individuals who have expressed a commitment to such an undertaking. (Author/publisher)
