This article describes a method of survey to get detailed and reliable data about amount and structure of the group of visitors in a certain area, for instance an inner-city. By means of combined counts and street interviews and by processing the data via a weighing procedure, one can gain an accurate insight into relevant characteristics of the visitors. The article gives some aspects of the set-up of such a survey. The second part of the article describes an application of the method. In Delft a before-and-after study was done after the effects on inner-city shops of implementing the so-called "accessibility traffic scheme". This survey, consisting of a shop-keepers enquiry and a survey of visitors, proved no negative effects for the retailing-trade.
