Abstract

This report presents the results of field measured passing performance to help establish the effects of delay on the drivers performance and safety of the passing maneuver over variable traffic volume levels. The effect of reduced passing opportunity appears to have a significant relationship to the drivers delay tolerance and the relationship with primacy which presumes that passing drivers value safety above all other driving goals. This paper was also published in Transportation Research Record No 1280 1990. For a fuller abstract, see IRRD No 843954.
