Abstract

BASED ON A SAMPLE OF 3000 PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS, CHARACTERISTIC INJURY PATTERNS IN CHILDREN, ADULTS AND ELDERLY PEOPLE ARE DESCRIBED. PEDESTRIAN INJURY FREQUENCY AND SEVERITY DISTRIBUTION ARE RELATED TO THE OVERALL NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY. PATTERNS OF MULTIPLE PEDESTRIAN INJURIES OBSERVED IN 578 CAR/PEDESTRIAN HEAD ON COLLISIONS WITH AN OVERALL SEVERITY INJURY OF OS1 2-6, ARE DISCUSSED TOGETHER WITH SOME CHARACTERISTIC COMBINATIONS OF MULTIPLE INJURIES. ALL MAJOR TYPES OF INJURY ARE CLASSIFIED IN ORDER OF IMPORTANCE WITHIN THE DIFFERENT OS1 CATEGORIES. THE INFLUENCE OF TYPICAL CAR SHAPES ON PEDESTRIAN INJURIES IS EXAMINED.
