This document briefly summarises a series of studies on pedestrian accidents conducted in France. The conclusions were finalised at a one-day conference organised by INRETS in September 1997 under the auspices of the French Transportation Ministry's Directorate for Road Safety and Traffic (DSCR). The aim of the conference was to enhance understanding of the circumstances in which pedestrian accidents involving an automobile occur. Participants sought to identify the causes and consequences of these accidents and their correlation with the characteristics of the people, vehicles, and environment involved. The findings revealed a number of pathways to further improvements in safety. (A)
