This report provides a literature review of factors contributing to pedestrian accidents. Two previous reports have provided the objectives and background to the pedestrian accident project. It examines two pedestrian accident models of precipitating factors in pedestrian accidents. It then focusses on the role of alcohol as a major predisposing factor. Age related and environmental predisposing factors are also examined. This report provides a contextual back drop to two forthcoming reports analysing the results of the pedestrian accident study and providing a range of countermeasures addressing the pedestrian accident problem.
