Abstract

The authors visited Delft in December, 1975, to study the area improvement activities, and particularly the traffic management techniques involved with them. An account is given of official policies concerning vehicular and pedestrian movement in different types of area, and the way they are being implemented by means of space-sharing by pedestrians and vehicles and speed restriction devices, including speed humps, chicanes and other types of obstruction to free movement. The local approach to road user education and public participation are also described. Although the individual techniques were not unusual, there was much to be learnt from the way in which they were associated and applied. (Author/publisher)
