Abstract

Based on a theoretical model pedestrian exposure was defined as the product of the numbers of pedestrians and vehicles observed in the same section in the same five minute interval. This exposure was described by identical pedestrian, vehicle and environment characteristics as there were accidents. Accident rates were analysed to show variations in pedestrian accident risk by pedestrian age, sex, grouping, pace and direction of movement, time of day, etc.
