Abstract

The paper presents a study of accident risks for pedestrians at rural highways. The main part consists of an extensive analysis of accident data. The causes of accidents seems to be the incorrect behaviour of the pedestrians, pedestrians or drivers under the influence of alcohol, poor lighting conditions and the insufficient facilities for pedestrians at the roadside. Previous mistakes made by land use planners and traffic engineers have serious impacts in the present times, e.g. forcing pedestrians to cross main roads because their homes are scattered at both sides of the highway or services are located at one side of the road while residential areas are located at the other side. The authors make recommendations for the future.
