Abstract

The interest in support for pedestrians, one of the nine development areas of ITS, has grown significantly. The purpose of the study is to develop a novel route guidance system for pedestrians. The proposed system guides a pedestrian by means of virtual walk using VRML (Virtual Reality Modelling Language) effectively, as if he walks on the real road. By using the attributes of the road or path, this system is capable of providing not only the shortest route but also the suitable route for various pedestrians, such as elderly/handicapped persons or strangers. This system can be realised either as a client-server type on the Internet or as a standalone type.
