Abstract

In recent years, there have been many advances in vehicle design which have increased safety for occupants. Few of these improvements are relevant to pedestrian safety. Yet one in five fatalities on Australian roads is a pedestrian. This study reviews pedestrian behaviour, crash site characteristics and vehicle behaviour in fatal pedestrian crashes using data collected from coronial investigations into fatal road crashes in Australia. The paper considers the possible impact of improved vehicle design on pedestrian safety. (A)
