Abstract

THIS REPORT DESCRIBES A MULTI DISCIPLINARY STUDY OF PEDESTRIAN SAFETY IMPROVEMENT BASED ON AN ANALYSIS OF THE MOVEMENTS OF PEDESTRIANS STRUCK BY VEHICLES. EXPERIMENTAL IMPACTS BETWEEN PEDESTRIANS AND VEHICLES WERE DESIGNED USING ANTHROPOMETRIC DUMMIES ("ONSER 50" DUMMY) AND CADAVERS. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE TEST FACILITIES, VEHICLES USED AND THEIR BRAKING DEVICES, AND TEST PROCEDURE. THE AIM OF THE RESEARCH IS TO DEVELOP: SPECIFICATIONS FOR VEHICLE GROUP DESIGNS WHICH WOULD REDUCE THE SEVERITY OF PEDESTRIAN INJURIES, A MORE RELIABLE AND ACCURATE ANTHROPOMETRIC DUMMY, AND A THREE-DIMENSIONAL MATHEMATICAL MODEL FOR SIMULATING PEDESTRIAN-VEHICLE COLLISIONS.
