The aim of this report, one of a series of three, is to present an up to date picture of the progress made in the development of environmental countermeasures for pedestrians, and in particular to assess the efficiency of such measures. The terms of reference for the subgroup set out five areas for study: (1) complete segregation of traffic and pedestrians with the creation of pedestrian precincts and pedestrian streets, and pedestrian routes and networks; (2) pedestrian priority areas where some vehicles are permitted to enter at certain times of day; (3) integration of mixed traffic in the urban environment; (4) pedestrian crossings; (5) other pedestrian facilities. Areas for further research are mentioned. For reports of subgroups 2 and 3, see IRRD abstracts nos 233685-233686.
