Abstract

The effectiveness of the law regarding drinking and driving is a multidimensional problem. This study, conducted in france, concentrates on young drivers in particular and examines the preventive function of the law called deterrence with reference to the effective enforcement of the law (intensity of police checks) and to the psycho-sociological characteristics of young drivers and their risk exposure. This analysis will be based on the results of various statistical work on convictions for drunken driving, on drivers' alcohol levels and on the impact of the law on fatal accidents. (A)
