Abstract

Traffic safety in Sweden has been improved tremendously in recent years. The number of traffic fatalities has steadily decreased and Sweden has one of the lowest traffic accident rates in the world. This is a result of a purposeful effort from many quarters of Swedish society. This publication describes the current state of traffic safety in Sweden as well as presentation of recent years' development. It discussed how the work is being done and who is doing it. At the end of the book, mention is also made of the traffic safety authorities and organisations that are providing their services to other countries. Some topics dealt with in this publication are: how Swedes "travel"; trends in traffic accidents; the causes of traffic accidents; which injuries result from traffic accidents; societal costs of traffic accidents; what the individual road user can do to improve his/her own and other people's traffic situation; and the efforts being made by agencies and organisations to improve traffic safety.
