Abstract

This paper discusses the SUPERPAVE System of products which resulted from the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP). These products addressed the following pavement distresses for dense graded asphalt mixtures: permanent deformation, fatigue cracking, low temperature cracking, including the effects of aging and moisture damage of these distresses. Although other types of pavement distress in hot mix asphalt pavement were recognized by the SHRP planners, a decision was made not to include them in this research effort. The final products of the program are: 1. A performance-based specification for asphalt binders complete with supporting tests; A performance-based specification for asphalt-aggregate mixtures complete with specification for asphalt-aggregate mixtures complete with supporting tests and performance prediction models; 3. A mixture design and analysis system which incorporates both the asphalt binder specification and the asphalt mixture specification; 4. A protocol to evaluate modified asphalt binder and 5. a SUPERPAVE software support system. (A)
