Abstract

Following consultation with interested authorities, the ACT administration in 1985 and 1986 installed 40 km /h speed limit zones adjacent to most primary and secondary schools in the ACT. These "school zones" apply between the hours of 8 am and 4 pm on weekdays during school terms. Vehicle speeds through the zones, before and after implementation of the zones, and in 1987 during school holidays and terms, were analysed in a study to assess the validity and effectiveness of the zones.
