Abstract

This paper deals with an intelligent transportation systems (ITS) highway monitoring and control system which is under development in an Italian pay-toll motorway. A traffic flow model, proposed in previous papers, is used. The traffic simulation is based on the stochastic description of the freeway system behaviour based on real data. The geometric and topological data are stored according to Geographic Data Files (GDF) standard while traffic data are collected in order to achieve the historical knowledge of flows; these historical data are used to forecast the traffic demand. The dynamic modelling of particular situations (such as working zones and capacity reduction) is also discussed. A model evaluation is finally performed.
