Abstract

The Kolkata Metro Railway is the first and only underground railway project implemented in India. The Metro Railway is running into heavy losses due to non-realisation of the passenger traffic projected initially apart from other reasons. The paper appraises the performance of the Metro Railway and suggests various measures to be taken for making it viable. The author has proposed to set up a unified Metropolitan Transport Authority to look after all modes of transport apart from other useful measures. For the covering abstract see ITRD E116619.
