Abstract

Electronic toll collection systems are becoming more and more important in the field of road transportation. In this article some general information is supplied about electronic toll collection systems. Then the main characteristics and achieved performances of the hamlet 2 system based upon a smart card are provided in order to show the feasibility and the high level of quality of such a system. Finally the advantages and the flexibility of a smart card system for future needs are discussed. (A)
