Abstract

This report compiles and documents information regarding the current state of practice for mounting permanent signs on top of rigid median barriers throughout the United States. A primary objective of this research is to assess the extent to which barrier-mounted signs are used and the level of consideration some practices give to potential safety concerns. This report will be immediately useful to highway design practitioners. Information used in this study was acquired through a review of the literature of state department of transportation standard plans specifications, as well as a review of national design policies, specifications, and guidelines. Information was also gathered through a survey of representatives in all states and select toll road authorities with potentially significant numbers of median-barrier-mounted signs.
