Permissive versus prohibitive symbols for regulatory traffic control signs.

Abstract

The philosophic question about the positive or negative approach to symbol signing is raised. It is indicated that the literature reporting research provided some evidence of the advantages of the positive approach-telling drivers what they can do rather than what they cannot highway symbol signs and systems. A discussion is added.
