Abstract

This paper outlines wireless information devices and the opportunities they open for value-added service and content providers and integrators. We discuss how two-way digital cellular communication is creating a new, highly potential channel for various kinds of information and transactional services on a commercial basis. While the devices are used both indoors and outdoors, they also offer an ideal platform to develop traveller-related service applications that are personalised for individual users. The recent developments in enabling technologies, namely Internet, mobile Internet, small-scale operating systems, Bluetooth low-power RF linking and higher bit rate wireless data bearers prove that there is now opportunity to implement versatile products and applications for mass markets.
