Prospects of new technology for sustainable transport. New fuels and vehicle technologies have the possibility to meet very strict CO2 emission goals in transport. Other environmental advantages of these techniques compared to the cleanest possible conventional technology are modest. The highest CO2 emission reduction are possible with so-called advanced biofuels (made from woody biomass) and with hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. With the restriction that hydrogen has to be made from natural gas with CO2 storage, wind energy, solar energy, nuclear energy or woody biomass. In order to fulfill the possibilities (in terms of environmental impact and costs) highly complicated technical problems have to be solved. The authors of the paper argue to carry out a careful policy strategy to stimulate these new technologies. (Author/publisher) Nederlands abstract: Sommige combinaties van nieuwe brandstoffen en nieuwe voertuigtechnieken hebben op de lange termijn de potentie om tot zeer lage kooldioxide (CO2)-uitstoot van verkeer en vervoer te komen. De technieken hebben bescheiden andere milieuvoordelen, bijvoorbeeld op het vlak van verbetering van de luchtkwaliteit, ten opzichte van de schoonst mogelijke conventionele technieken (olie en verbrandingsmotoren). Op dit moment hebben de meeste CO2-potentie: geavanceerde biobrandstoffen gemaakt uit houtachtige biomassa en brandstofcel-waterstof-voertuigen, waarbij de waterstof wordt gemaakt uit aardgas met CO2-opslag, wind, zonne-energie, kernenergie en houtachtige biomassa. Er zijn nog flinke technische doorbraken nodig willen deze technieken qua effecten en kosten hun potentie waarmaken.
