This paper describes the current and future ITS developments in the city of Belo Horizonte - Brazil, covering the fields of transportation planning, traffic control and enforcement, electronic ticketing, bus operation control, user information and pollution monitoring. Apart from the funding problems, the deployment of ITS systems in developing cities faces other obstacles like the lack of a national or local ITS architecture, unawareness of ITS devices and related benefits, lack of research on technology and deficient telecommunication network. Despite those negative aspects, the incipient use of ITS devices in Belo Horizonte has already shown gains in transportation planning activities and also in traffic safety levels.
