Abstract

This paper presents a study of the characteristics of the trips of mobility handicapped people in Cairo, and of possible policies and measures to improve their mobility. The study also aimed to identify the perceptions of mobility handicapped people about the severity of the problems that they encountered while using Cairo buses. The needs and perceptions of physically handicapped and visually handicapped people were investigated, using a survey with a revealed preference questionnaire, comprising both ranking and choice questions. The most common trip purpose for both types of person was travel to and from work, and the most common mode that they both used was public buses. Very few of the physically handicapped people had driving licences. The transport problems encountered by both types were analysed; restricted use of travel passes on all bus routes was the main problem for each type. Detailed tables and charts of the survey's results are included. The many policies and measures proposed are grouped into: (1) special transport policies, to improve the travelling environment for the mobility impaired; (2) relatively inexpensive measures to improve their mobility and accessibility; and (3) relatively costly measures.
