Abstract

This lecture stresses the need for the pedestrian's point of view in the planning of traffic for city centres. Traffic pattern differ widely between homogeneous (residential areas) and heterogeneous (city centres). Some examples are quoted about investigations on behaviour of pedestrians. Functional city maps are useful to get an insight in their wishes. Arnhem is compared with some other cities in the Netherlands. The trend in the Netherlands towards suburbanization is contrary to the development of cities with an optimum size of about 100.000 inhabitants. A concentric city model is described to make disting towns better accessible for pedestrians.
