Abstract

In 2004 the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Government released the Sustainable Transport Plan. One of the key projects of this plan is the Gungahlin to Civic busway, a transit corridor. The Gungahlin to Civic busway links Canberra's city centre, Civic to its newest town, Gungahlin. This paper outlines the provision for current (i.e. buses) and other future transit modes. The history of the planning for this transit corridor will be given. This includes the travel demand and transit mode options. The potential for transit oriented development in greenfields areas will be outlined. In contrast, there are the urban design challenges of locating the transit corridor on a main avenue, as defined by the National Capital Plan. The design solutions and process will be explained. Current implementation measures, such as bus lanes and real time passenger information will be part of the paper. The identification of future issues and challenges will complete the picture of an evolving busway. The busway will assist the ACT in moving towards transport sustainability.
