Abstract

A series of slides is presented on the planning and financing of light rail in the UK. The planning framework for light rapid transport (LRT) is outlined and the status of current LRT project in the UK is described. Briefdescriptions are given of the Croydon Tramlink, Edinburgh LRT, Nottinghamtram, Liverpool LRT, and Manchester Metrolink Phases 1, 2 and 3. Slides are presented that relate to public transport integration, design issues, the financial performance, legislative issues, public perception, cost, risk transfer and funding, procurement options, stakeholders and components of the consortia, the need for early operator involvement and the National Audit Office report on light rail.
