Abstract

The first part gives a short summary of Guidelines in Scandinavia for traffic planning with focus on safe planning for bicyclists. The second part describes results based on a field survey of abot 14000 schoolchildren between the ages of 6 and 16 conducted in five Swedish, one Norwegian and three Finnish towns. The third and last part discusses the effect a bicycle network has on safety. This discussion is based on a literature survey as well on interviews with experts and cyclists, and an attempt to weave together these different sources in estimating the effect of a particular lay-ouut. The Bayesian method used combining results proved to be appropriate.
