Abstract

The author discuss the reasons for the increasing use of cycling as a mode of transport and describes the facilities provided by some councils in England comparing them with those in the Netherlands. Cyclists are likely to feel much safer on a segregated cycle track. However, many of the older existing tracks are poorly maintained and they lack safe connections at junctions. Suggestions are made of the methods which could be used to provide cycleways in older urban areas.
