Abstract

The historical development of traffic signal control is discussed. The situation at the present time is outlined and this is followed by discussing the various planning considerations. These include the quality of traffic service, the need for area control, selection for critical intersections, selection of areas to be controlled, control strategies, and types of systems. Cost estimates are included to provide a basis for comparing the various types of systems.
