This issue of Current Topics includes over 80 abstracts of reports, conference papers, books and journal articles which focus on transport policies and initiatives to improve the safety and attractiveness of the pedestrian and cyclist environment. Subjects covered include the assessment, planning, design and operation of cyclist and pedestrian safety schemes, such as cycle paths, junction design, pedestrian crossings, pedestrian and cyclist behaviour, and government policies to encourage cycling and walking as viable transport modes. These items have been selected from the material added to the TRL Library Database between 1999 and 2001. Much of the relevant English language published literature from the UK, USA, Australia and Europe is included; some of the non-UK literature is included courtesy of the OECD International Transport Research Documentation (ITRD) database.
