Abstract

The problem of urban transportation has no single cause but has resulted from the form of city growth. The advent of the private car is only one of a number of important contributing factors to this pattern of growth. At the present density of New Zealand private cars are the most suitable form of transport for the smaller cities but in the larger cities public transport modes must continue to play a significant role.
