Abstract

This article is a largely expository effort to set up definitions of traffic flow as a stochastic process. In this process each outcome consists of a set of vehicle trajectories in the time-space plane. The process is called homogeneous in a certain direction if distributions are invariant under shifts of the plane in that direction and if any stationary process created by shifting in a fixed direction is also ergodic.
