Abstract

Modification of bitumen and bituminous mixture is supposed to be the most effective improvement of pavement properties for Polish climatic and material conditions. After extensive laboratory testing, the modification of bituminous mixtures was implemented practically by the Road and Bridge Research Institute in Poland with cooperating contractors in Warsaw to execute full-scale trials. The method of direct modification was chosen because of reserve exhibited by potential modified bitumen producers. A variety of applications of styrene butadiene styrene modified bituminous mixtures were trialled in 1990-1992. Laboratory tests and field trials showed encouraging results and new technological possibilities in road maintenance and construction.
