Abstract

The registration of Daytime Running Lights (DRL) use was virtually brought to a halt in the Netherlands in the year 1992. However, there are indications that the government's policy decision to promote DRL use has had a positive effect on the willingness of the police to cooperate with the collection of DRL-related data in 1993. The automation of accident registration by the police will require extra effort, if it is decided to register DRL use in accidents in the year 1993. One exception to this statement is the regional department of Limburg South, which has decided autonomously to add this infomation to their automated accident registration package. The interest and willingness shown by the police departments indicates that the registration of DRL data is feasible in the year 1993, provided a DRL category is added to the registration package of the 'Groningen' division. On the question of whether DRL registration is justified in 1993, it is stated, for instance, that at least 16,000 accident forms supplying the necessary DRL data are required. It is possible to achieve this estimated figure in one year, provided that at least four regional police departments are willing to cooperate with such DRL registration.
