Wat houdt politiestraatwerk in de praktijk in? Hoe heeft het zich in de afgelopen jaren ontwikkeld? En welke invloed had de introductie van 'gebiedsgebonden werken' daarop? De auteurs geven een gedetailleerde beschrijving van de activiteiten die straatagenten in drie kleinere steden en een grote stadwijk ondernemen. Daarbij is stelselmatig onderscheid gemaakt tussen noodhulp en gebiedsgebonden politiewerk, maar ook de dwarsverbanden tussen de twee komen aan bod. Dit 'standaardwerk' biedt een valide en betrouwbare methodiek om - periodiek - politiestraatwerk systematisch in kaart te brengen en het geeft een minitieus beeld van wat politiestraatwerk nu feitelijk inhoudt en in hoeverre het zich 'van bovenaf' laat sturen. Verder wordt de Nederlandse situatie vergeleken met die in andere Westerse landen. Dit alles maakt het onderzoek van grote waarde voor zowel politiemanagers als politieautoriteiten en beleidsmakers. (Author/publisher) English abstract: Citizens solve most of the problems that they have with law and order on their own. Still, the police play a rather considerable additional role. The police respond to requests for assistance and also frequently come into action on their own initiative. Society has given the police the mandate to exercise control and to apply sanctions on its behalf, but not a free hand. A prerequisite for a legitimate police authority is that society has the means to control how the police fulfil their task. This is achieved through steering the police authority in advance and control afterwards. This type of supervision requires adequate insight into what the police do and how police work develops in terms of content. This study is about the what and how of everyday police work and focuses on four main questions: 1) What is the content of everyday police patrol work (emergency patrol and community policing)?; 2) How are these two types of police work related?; 3) How has police work developed during the past ten years as regards content?; 4) How can one explain local differences in police work and what does that imply concerning the possibilities of steering police work?
