Abstract

This paper deals with the growth of clandestine ("informal") travel in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) over the last ten years, and proposes some solutions to the problem. After analyzing the evolution in the number of passengers in the region, the paper presents policies seeking to control the number of "informal" travel by offering alternative means of responding to this demand. (A) The English title of the paper is: "Policies to control informal transporters : the Rio de Janeiro case."
