Abstract

A scenario of intelligent carpooling (ride sharing) is presented. The negative attitudes of city traffic managers and officials to carpooling are discussed. The development of the AMS Advanced Mobility Services carpooling initiative is outlined. The system has 381,000 on-line carpooling users. A geographical information system (GIS) has been introduced so passengers can be picked up en route. Users have to register and their identity is checked and communication is controlled. The company is in talks with over 20 cities to integrate intelligent carpooling in combination with parking and links with public transport. It is concluded that there are enough cars to guarantee more mobility and less traffic if intelligent carpooling is recognised. For the covering abstract see ITRD E115762.
