Abstract

Driving is very important for independence, particularly in handicapped persons. The application of medical fitness regulations must, therefore, not be unduly limiting. In evaluating fitness to drive, one must take into account how effectively handicaps are compensated, whether by adapted skills or technical aids. This has created a need for experts who can administer on-road tests in a reliable and socially acceptable manner and can estimate opportunities for rehabilitation (i.e., experts in practical fitness to drive). In some EC countries a formalized approach to on-road tests has emerged that is embedded in official procedures for medical fitness to drive. Leading experts in this field are working together to make the existing knowledge and expertise available in the form of a Handbook of Driving Assessment applicable in the whole EU. It will be an up-to-date practical and accessible compilation of knowledge, skills and attitudes required by experts in practical fitness to drive. (Author/publisher)
