"Portrait of a young driver" : technical background information. Final report.

Abstract

The following materials were compiled for AM-Michigan in support of the effort to prepare another edition of a series of "Portraits of. . ." The current issue is the young driver. As defined for the purposes of this effort, a young driver is a driver age 15-18 inclusive. Data from student surveys, personal transportation surveys, Michigan State Police crash records, and Michigan Department of State driver history files, as well as existing scientific literature describing the young driver were examined to provide insight into a description of the young driver in Michigan. This report is organized as follows: * Number of licensed drivers and annual mileage; * Trip characteristics; * Traffic crashes; * Frequency; * Severity; * Chronology; * Contributing factors; and * Summary and recommendations.
