Abstract

Much has been done through road design, vehicle design and traffic engineering to improve the match between the demands the driving task imposes on the road user and the user' s capacity to cope. While this ergonomic approach has been applied to a range of traffic safety issues its potential as a strategy to counter alcohol-related crashes has barely begun to be assessed. This paper examines the nationally for such a strategy, estimates its potential and reviews recent developments.
