Abstract

The development of Truck Mounted Attenuators (TMAs) is outlined and details given of tests carried out around the world. The use of TMAs in Great Britain is considered in more detail. A table is provided of the extent to which TMAs are currently used in Great Britain. Currently all are distributed by Triplex Engineering on behalf of Energy Absorption Systems Inc. They are particularly used for mobile lane closure situations. The compulsory use of TMAs is discussed. The effects of compulsory competitive tendering and government reorganisation are considered. The role of road works in road accidents is discussed with reference to literature on the subject. Information is provided about accidents involving TMAs in Great Britain. The potential economic benefits of TMAs are assessed. It is concluded that TMAs have an important contribution to make to safety at road works.
