Abstract

This report attempts to assess how new technologies and organisational innovations influence transport supply and it gives hints for the development of transport supply scenarios in the 2020 perspective. The following developments are considered: telematics/information technologies, intermodality (passengers and freight), autonomous urban systems and magnetic levitation technology. The study shows that the impact of new technologies/innovations depends principally on their dissemination, and the extent to which they are adopted by operators and by society. One of the main conclusions of the study is that intelligent transport systems will have the most significant impact on transport supply in the 2020 perspective, but that institutional use for traffic and safety regulation will depend upon European-wide agreement on standards and financing schemes.
