Abstract

This guide is intended as a quick reference document for use by site operatives and supervisors involved with the reinstatements of openings in highways under the UK legislation New Roads and Street Works Act 1991. It does not provide a replacement for the code of practice 'Specification for the reinstatement of openings in highways (Second Edition [England], June 2002)'. Practical advice to assist good workmanship and promote the highest standards of reinstatement by site operatives and supervisors is provided in accordance with the code of practice. The contents include: specification designs and categories; tools and equipment; signing, lighting and guarding; undertaking excavations; trench sidewall support; precautions for protecting trees; excavating surfacings; excavating below surface layers; notes on compaction; preparing subgrade; working with buried apparatus; reinstating backfill; reinstating sub-base; reinstating upper layers; reinstating roadbase for flexible / composite roads and footways; reinstating roadslab for rigid roads; reinstating surface slab for rigid footways; reinstating modules; notes on hot-lay bituminous materials; reinstating hot-lay bituminous surfacing layers; overbanding; verges and unmade ground; and leaving the finished site. The annexes include backfill materials, compactionequipment, alternative reinstatement materials, reinstating cold-lay surfacing materials, laying temperatures, air void contents, laid profiles andskidding resistance.
