Abstract

This report describes and analyses the driving instruction actually given to 20 young learner drivers by one of four top grade Approved Driving Instructors. These pupils did not drive between lessons and so this report represents a unique and comprehensive insight into driver training and learning during the pre-test period for fully formally trained drivers. This report is in 6 chapters: (1) data collection procedures; (2) types and number of manoeuvres made whilst learning to drive; (3) frequency of pupil instruction and aspect of the task covered; (4) changes to instruction as the learner driver gains experience; (5) the mathematical relationship between instruction and experience; and (6) implications of the research for improving learner driving.
