Abstract

Compaction control of the subbase in the netherlands is still based on the density achieved. Nevertheless, the most characteristic property of a subbase is its stability. The difference between these two parameters is explained and a recommendation is made to replace the time consuming system of density control by the use of the dynamic sounding apparatus. Moreover, the modern self registering devices of the big vibratory roller factories deserve more attention. A separate problem is the stability of the boundary layer between subbase and pavement, particularly the trafficability of this layer.
