Abstract

The On Board Unit (OBU) using IC (integrated circuit) card has been adapted for the ETC (electronic toll collection) system in Japan. This OBU, so called two-piece type OBU, has several advantages compared to one-piece type OBU in terms of multipurpose payment using credit card or electronic money. Because of the advantage, the OBU using IC card is becoming more common in ETC system of the world. However, the OBU using IC card causes stopped vehicles on ETC lanes due to forgetting to insert an IC card. This paper describes the system to warn a driver without an IC card before entering an ETC lane by giving them some warning messages through OBU, where an installed antenna before the ETC lane checks the status of OBU and send a signal of "no card" to the OBU. The current status and effect of the warning system is given and further study to minimize stopped vehicles on ETC lanes is considered. For the covering abstract see ITRD E134653.
